Changing Housing Status

How do I change my housing status for financial aid?

If your housing status is expected to be different than what you listed on the FAFSA, submit an Adjustment to Housing Status form. Your housing status will be updated and financial aid awards will be reevaluated. Please see below for important information regarding timelines for award adjustments and information about which adjustments are done automatically.

Please be aware that any changes in housing status may impact your financial aid eligibility. For example, if you change from on campus to off campus your estimated Cost Of Attendance (COA) will be reduced as the estimated COA for living off campus is less than the estimated COA for living on campus. In turn, your financial aid eligibility will be reduced. Depending on your aid eligibility, grants/scholarships, loans or work study opportunities may be reduced. In nearly every case, if you are offered a Bobcat Grant or Scholarship that award will be adjusted.

Students living off campus or at home with relatives will still be offered financial aid to help with living expenses such as rent, utilities, etc. Tuition/fees and health insurance (if that applies) will be directly charged through your UC Merced Student Billing Account. This is the same account where financial aid disbursements are credited. If your financial aid disbursements are more than the charges, the remaining amount will be refunded to you. You can then use the refund to help pay rent, food, living expenses, books, etc., throughout the semester. Please remember that financial aid is usually disbursed in two disbursements, half in fall and half in spring. It may be helpful to create a budget and plan expenses carefully to ensure the funds last the entire semester.
